Tom Hanks‘ son, Chet Hanks, is getting a lot of attention right now for… all the wrong reasons.
Colin Hanks‘ younger bro was out and about at the Golden Globes last night, evidently doing the red carpet thing to support his movie star father, when the 29-year-old was captured on camera speaking… Jamaican patois? Wait, WTF?!
A video clip went viral on social media on Sunday night showing the second-youngest Hanks kid going off on the camera in what appeared to be a Jamaican patois-like dialect. You can see the whole (disturbing, random, questionable) thing here:
why is Tom Hanks' son Chet Hanks speaking patois?
Thankfully, we’re not the only ones completely confused by whatever it is we’re seeing here. As you can see (below), other social media users had a TON of reactions to the bizarre social media post:
Another Twitter user laughed out loud at the clip, writing, “LMAO. He thinks we don’t know that his dad is Tom Hanks. He is as white as they come!”
Still another pointed out something more serious about the language used in the video, too:
“*deep sigh* THIS is what happens when privileged ppl don’t respect cultural boundaries. Some truly feel this is ok. I’d like to suggest learning the difference between cultural APPRECIATION and APPROPRIATION.”
Well said!
Others had more eclectic commentary on Chet, with one person tweeting, “Sometimes the apple falls off the tree and rolls down a hill and into a ravine.”
Another one added more:
“I can’t describe how deeply my soul has been disturbed. I thought he gave up the appropriation after rehab?! I know he’s Tom’s biggest disappointment lol.”
And an exasperated follower noted the poor guy might’ve been set up to fail for a while:
“I know we think that Tom Hanks can do no wrong, but I blame him and Rita Wilson for this. You can’t name your son ‘Chet’ and then expect that great things will come of it. 🤷🏾♀️”
Ouch!!!
Of course, we feel the same way one final tweeter did, when they replied with, “Thank god for Colin. The legacy is only safe with him.”
Ha! Not lying…
Chet himself actually reacted to the controversy, too, publishing this sarcastic post on his own IG feed (below):
Hmm…
Seriously, Perezcious readers… what the heck do you make of this video?? How concerned should we be here??
