For anyone in the New York City area, getting Snapchat Spectacles is fairly simple, assuming you have the money. There’s a store, after all that brick and mortar thing people physically travel to in order to make purchases.
But if you’re not in the area (and you’re not willing to chase a pair of Spectacles down at the random kiosks that pop up every so often), there are other ways to get them for anyone who might want them for the holidays.
That said, you’ll almost certainly have to cough up more cash. Here are the ways you can do it:
Buy a pair inside the actual Spectacles store
The lines have died down from the insanity of the opening. All you have to do is show up, get a wristband with a time to come back later that day (the store opens at 4 p.m. ET), and show up at that appointed time. The process will probably take a few hours, but you can do some holiday shopping while you wait. You’ll be in midtown, after all.
Buy a pair from some shady person outside the NYC store
Wait long enough around the line for New York City’s Snapchat Spectacles store and maybe, just maybe, you won’t have to wait long at all.
More than a few people have approached folks standing in or around the line outside the Spectacles store, offering to sell them a pair at a mark-up in exchange for not having to wait around.
One of our writers made eye contact with a woman pressed to the side of a nearby building. She must have seen his wristband, because she immediately pulled out a pair of Spectacles and asked if he wanted to buy them. We’ve also heard tell of a man who walks around the line carrying two bags full of Spectacles, though we did not witness this man ourselves.
Buying from one of these folks wasn’t necessarily a bad idea for New Yorkers back in November, when lines at the Spectacles store were agonizingly long and the hallowed space inside seemed more like a dreamland than something attainable by any mortal not willing to experience some leg cramps. Now, though, things have changed.
Buy them online
Ebay has a ton of Spectacles on sale for a range of prices, though there are plenty in the $250-300 range. Craigslist, too, has a bunch of Spectacles on sale for somewhere in the same price range, though Ebay is probably the better option if you want them delivered directly to you in the shortest time possible.
They are still not cheap, but they’ve come way down from the $5,000-range price tags from when Spectacles first became a thing earlier this year. So if you’ve got the means and you know someone who wants them badly enough, your best bet may well be the internet.
