SNL’s take on CNN’s politics panel isn’t subtle at all

Distrust of the media was one of the many storylines that ran through the 2016 presidential election cycle, and CNN wasn’t spared by Saturday Night Live in the wake of Donald Trump’s election.

During Saturday’s episode, SNL took on CNN’s multiple-member political analysis panel including break-out member Van Jones, Dana Bash, David Axelrod, and Trump supporter Kayleigh McEnany and the shallowness of the panel-style format (something that isn’t exclusive to CNN).

While it’s hardly a subtle message, it’s still effective, highlighting the repetitive nature of cable television news and its propensity to focus on the latest drama before moving on, skirting past deeper problems for the love of ratings-grabbing fireworks from panelists.

It’s a steady diet of noise over substance, repeated endlessly on a 24-7 cycle until the viewer is numb to anything that’s actually newsworthy.

Adding a satirical edge to the skit: a fun twist that brings in a (non-spoiler) element of HBO’s popular Westworld series.

International viewers can catch the skit here.
