Awaiting sentencing for the murder of ReevaSteenkamp, Oscar Pistorius has given his first TV interview since her death, and claimed that his girlfriend wouldn’t have wanted him to spend his life behind bars.
Oscar shot Reeva through the bathroom door on Valentine’s Day, 2013, later claiming that he thought that she was an intruder.
Initially found guilty ofculpable homicide (akin to manslaughter in British law), Oscar was sentenced to five years in prison, and served just a year before being released to house arrest.
Following an appeal from the prosecution – who argued that Oscar had intentionally shot Reeva following a heated argument – the South African supreme court overturned this decision, and found Pistorius guilty of her murder.
Currently awaiting sentencing, Oscar recently gave a TV interview to ITV, and explained why he didn’t want to go back to prison:
Saying that “Reeva wouldn’t want him to waste his life behind bars”, healso spoke of his own pain of losing his girlfriend:
“Reeva was a fantastic person, but if their premise is based on the fact that I took her life intentionally, which has not been found then its a very sad thing.
I understand the pain people feel, that loved her and miss her. I feel that same pain.
And I look back and I think, I always think how did this possibly happen? I think, how could this have happened? How could this have happened?”
Giving his account of the night that he killed Reeva, Oscar got emotional as he recounted the disturbing moment that (he claims) he realised that it was Reeva – and not an intruder – that he had killed:
“I opened the toilet door and immediately when I saw Reeva she was over the toilet, she had slumped over the toilet.
At that point I knew I had killed her, I knew she was dead. I went down onto my knees and pulled her onto me.”
Reeva’s family were reportedly asked to take part in the TV programme, but declined.
Oscar Pistorius: The Interview will air at 9pm on Friday, on ITV.
