Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) said Donald Trump winning the Republican caucus in his state Tuesday night left him feeling queasy.
Trump claiming 42 percent of the vote in Hawaii, a state that has a sizable population with Japanese ancestry, is especially disappointing considering the candidate has suggested he might have supported the incarceration of Japanese-Americans during World War II, Schatz tweeted Wednesday morning.
About 120,000 Japanese-Americans were imprisoned during the war, and hundreds were held in Hawaii’s Honouliuli detention facility. President Barack Obama designated it a national monument last year.
In December, Trump told Time that he couldn’t say with certainty whether he would have endorsed or opposed such wartime imprisonments.
“I would have had to be there at the time to tell you, to give you a proper answer,” he said at the time. “I certainly hate the concept of it. But I would have had to be there at the time to give you a proper answer.”
Editor’s note: Donald Trump is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist, birther and bully who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.
