Border Agents Stop Handing Over Families to Prosecutors

The commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection said that the agency will suspend handing over immigrants with children to prosecutors until the CBP and the Justice Department can “agree on a policy that would allow parents to be prosecuted without separating them from their children,” The New York Times reports. Due to space constraints in detention facilities, many families will reportedly be released and asked to return for court hearings—much like the Obama administration’s “catch and release” policy that has been lambasted by President Donald Trump. The announcement puts another ding in the Trump administration’s assertion that a “zero tolerance” is still in place. “We’re not changing the policy. We’re simply out of resources,” White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters.
