Now that summer is just around the corner, plenty of us are exchanging our sweaters for our crop tops because we can afford to show a bit of extra skin. And it’s around this time of year that we desperately try to attain that flat stomach we’ve always wanted.
Here are 20 foods that’ll help you lose weight:
However, there are plenty of things that will hinder you from achieving just that. Of course, not doing exercise is one of these factors, but it’s mostly about your food intake.
Some foods simply bloat your stomach more than others, so if you’re opting for a leaner look this summer, you might want to avoid the following foods:
Dairy products such as milk and cheese can cause problems for your digestive system, and that’s especially the case if you happen to be lactose intolerant. Lactose is a natural sugar that is found in dairy products and those who are lactose intolerant don’t have the enzymes which would normally break it down.
2. Cruciferous vegetables
Examples of cruciferous vegetables include Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and broccoli. They have plenty of health benefits primarily because they’re a great source of fiber, vitamin C, and folate. They can even help protect against illnesses like cancer.
However, they also contain raffinose which is a type of carbohydrate that our bodies are unable to break down because we don’t have the enzyme to do so.
Raffinose is actually fermented by bacteria which often goes on to cause bloating. If you still want to include these vegetables as part of your diet, you might want to roast or steam them, making them easier to digest.
3. Foods which are high in sodium
Many of us consume more than the recommended daily amount of salt. When this happens, our bodies will react by retaining water leading our stomachs to bloat. As a general rule, the average person should not consume more than 2,300 mg of salt a day.
On the other hand, those who have high blood pressure or diabetes, or who are over the age of 50, should not be consuming more than 1,500 mg per day. Foods which are packaged and processed – such as deli meats, canned soups, and pre-made sauces – usually contain large amounts of sodium.
In the same way that foods high in sodium do, alcohol causes the body to hold onto water, which leads to bloating.
Legumes are a good source of fiber which is good for you but too much of this nutrient can make your food hard to digest. They contain a lot of fiber which our body cannot absorb and so our gut bacteria deals with them instead, which causes gas and bloating.
In future, you might want to try eating legumes with whole grains (like rice or quinoa) that are easy to digest.
While plain yogurt is good for your stomach because it contains probiotics, which regulate digestion, flavored yogurt isn’t all that great. That’s because they’re typically high in sugar meaning more fermentation in your body, in turn meaning more bloating.
7. Carbonated drinks
It doesn’t matter if it’s a soda or sparkling water – carbonated beverages lead to bloating. Why? Well, the bubbles in these drinks can cause your stomach to inflate.
Many people will replace sugar with sweeteners because they have no calories. But it’s not all about calories – artificial sweeteners like xylitol and sorbitol take a long time for the small intestine to digest, which leads to bloating.
The main reason popcorn tends to cause bloating is simply because of the amount the average person will eat in one sitting.
Many people gorge themselves on the light snack whilst at the movie theatre, to the point where it no longer becomes just a “light snack”.
Apples contain fiber, fructose, and sorbitol which all lead to bloating. The latter two are natural sugars that a lot of people cannot digest properly.
So there you have it: if you’re hoping to show off a flatter belly this summer, you know what to do!
